Happy Friday!!!

What are some of your favorite blogs to read?

What are your plans for the weekend?

I’m excited because we are having friends over for dinner tomorrow night. I love getting together and having friends over for food and drinks.

Over the weekend I plan to do some digging and see what new blogs I can find to read. I love stumbling on new blogs and seeing what others are writing about these days.

New Blogspot Themes

Blogspot just came out with some new themes for their blogs: Contempo, Soho, Emporio, and Noteable.

Blogspot still has these popular themes: Simple, Dynamic Views, Picture Window, Awesome Inc, Watermark, Ethereal, and Travel.

You can customize your blog themes on Blogspot, too.

I’m thinking about making a change and trying out some new themes.

What are some of your favorite places to check out new blog themes?

Do you think a blog’s theme makes a difference?

Fake News and Fake People

I have a theory about fake news and fake people on the internet. It’s all about how much traffic you can generate and how much money you can make.

Before you fall for that fake news story ask yourself where it comes from. Don’t assume that because the story is coming from a “credible” source that it’s actually truthful.

People who write stories are doing so because it’s their job. It’s what they were hired to do. There are so many things you have to consider long before you fall for believing the story.

The more traffic a story generates the more money that company will make. It’s how people earn their paychecks and pay their bills.

There are many great writers out there who care about what it is they are writing about. They care about facts, truthfulness, and educating the public. There are also many great writers out there who care about their content; they just don’t care that much for facts, truthfulness, but more about misleading the public.

Many times writers are driven by an agenda in the name of something. It’s the same way with politicians, teachers, people who run non-profits, and the list goes on. (Those are just a few examples)

When you are weeding through the information on the internet take this into consideration before you agree that something is an outrage or that an injustice has happened. Sensational titles are what drive the traffic to the web site.

If you see a story on social networking that sounds outlandish, you can bet that it probably is, and they don’t care! They just want you to click on the link. They want you to keep reading. They accomplish their goal which is to suck you in.

It’s like fishing! Their story is the hook, the crazy title is the worm, and you are the fish. They are hoping you not only click the article, but that you read it, see their ads, and actually believe what the article has to say.

Come on people, we are better than this! You are smarter that these silly tactics. Don’t fall for it. Pay attention to the .com, .org, .net, .biz, etc. You can research to find out who actually owns the domain. Do you know the person? Is this person well known for their advocacy?

If you’re reading what you think is a credible source mind yourself because there are many “credible” sources out there that I thought were okay but have morphed into something I don’t even recognize any more. I have a slew of sites I used to frequent that I will no longer entertain because it’s a waste of time.

Going to a site that won’t even let you read the article they claim to have written because there are too many pop-up ads should tell you everything you need to know about that site’s agenda.

If I am browsing and can’t get the article, I don’t even bother trying to read because I know I’ve succeeded in putting money in their pockets and securing their jobs. The more clicks, the more money they make. What a disservice!

I feel sorry for my friends and family who fall for it. They re-share and pass on outrageous stories that aren’t even true. It makes me shake my head. That’s time spent you can never get back.

Personally, I need to stop following fake people. Those people who set up services to generate content to keep their audience chewing on those fish hooks. If someone is posting on facebook, twitter, or other social networking platforms and it fires off content every five minutes, know you are not really engaging with a real person. How sad is that!?

Is advertising bad? No, that’s not what I’m saying. The best sites and blogs do have some ads but they don’t overpower the site’s purpose. Readers can usually choose whether or not they want to see what the ad is about and click through. Most credible sites have real people posting quality content and stories that are factual. You can research the site’s motto and check out all the contributors in their “about” section.

Quite frankly, I’m tired of being duped. I’m tired of my friends falling for the schemes and tricks and then passing it along as if the story had any credibility in the first place.

These are my words. I’m a real person. I don’t work for anyone and I don’t have any ads on my site. I’m not trying to trick you and I’m not getting paid to post. Networking with like-minded people is my goal and if I can make a new friend in the process, that makes me happy.

I’m not interested in fake news or fake people. I didn’t spend days on this post. It took me about 20 minutes to type it up. I’m not the best at proofreading and you will probably find grammatical mistakes.

I will get off my soapbox now but do let me know what you think in the comments.

What is your favorite Blog Platform?

The only blog platforms I’m familiar with are Blogspot and Wordpress. I’ve heard of Tumblr but I’m not really sure about how that one works.

Are there other blog platforms that you use? What is your favorite blog platform? Have you tried some blog platforms and didn’t care much for them?

The only blog platforms I’ve tried and used over the years are Blogspot and Wordpress. I have taken my sites and used the free versions of Blogspot to try and save money but I think I’m kind of tired of the look and feel of Blogspot blogs.

I’ve used Wordpress blogs before and love how smoothly they run but am wondering if there is something newer out there that I haven’t tried?

I’m the type of person that likes to try new things. I don’t mind test-driving new platforms to check out their efficiency.

What blogging platforms have you used? Do you like them and why?

Leave me a comment and let’s have a conversation about blogging platforms! Don’t forget to link your blog.

Blogging with a Pen Name or Real Name

Do you blog with a pen name or do you use your real name? Which one do you prefer and why?

I have blogged with my real name and with a pen name. I can see the pros and cons of both.

When you blog with both you are taking credit for both. They are both public but one is known and the other is unknown.

Many times people want to write under a pen name so they can express themselves and be free of judgment in their personal lives whether it’s on or off the internet. Let’s face it, there are a lot of critical judgy people out there and it’s hard enough to fit in while the entire world watching your every move.

Sometimes the subject matter will drive someone to use a pen name because there are some things that are hard to express without feeling slightly apprehensive of what your audience might think.

There are many out there that use their real name and just GO FOR IT. They don’t care what people think and if there is something controversial to say, they DIVE RIGHT IN without a care in the world.

I have seen known people get in a lot of trouble for using their real names and suffer the consequences of future employers letting them go, or people snubbing them in real life because they said the unthinkable.

What do you think? Do you think it’s better to blog with your real name or go with a pen name? Do you care what your audience thinks? What about potential employers? Do you think they care? Does it matter?

Let’s talk about this! Leave a comment and don’t forget to link to your blog.

Seasonal Blogging and Topics of Interest

Do you enjoy reading blogs that feature topics of interest? What topics do you find interesting? Do you have a list of friends who blog? What’s your blogging purpose?

These are valid questions as I contemplate what I’m going to write about today. I’m also thinking about a new direction I’m going to take with my own writing. I guess you could say I’m bouncing ideas around with you guys.

Right now in my Feedly I have a few topics going of blogs I am interested in reading at the moment: Blog Mommas, Church, Politics, Psychology, Random, Christian, Fitness, Fostering, Friends, and Technical.

Blog Mommas – This is a list of all the blogs listed on Blog Mommas who actively blog. Believe it or not, I am reading your blogs. I may not always leave a comment but you can surely count on the fact that I am reading.

Church – This is a list of all the blogs by people who go to my church. I love this list because it gives me a chance to see what people are up to and what they’re passionate about. I also like to list blogs by people in leadership at church.

Politics – This is a list of all the people I’m connected to who write about what’s going on in the world. If you follow the political movements in this country, and I’m connected to you, I’m probably very interested in what you think of the current political climate. I also enjoy reading blogs by people in talk radio.

Psychology – Yep, I’m a fan of blogs and bloggers who write about the brain, how it works, and why people do what they do. If you can learn more about what makes us tick and how to solve behavioral issues, you will have a lot more knowledge and peace in your world. Believe it or not, there is a reason why people behave poorly, and with every challenge there is a solution. Without that knowledge I would find myself pretty stuck, and if you know me well, I am not one to stay stuck. So yeah, these type of blogs interest me greatly.

Random – This is a list of blogs by people who I find interesting. There is no rhyme or reason to this list. These are just blogs that have sparked something in me to just read them. Reading random blogs about anything can be fun!

Christian – This would be my list of people who blog that I may never meet face-to-face, I love their ministry, and they write about things that bring me closer to God.

Fitness – Yep, I subscribe to blogs that teach me more about fitness. This is how I get my exercise routines and find new healthy recipes to try. I also enjoy reading about the frustrations and successes of someone’s weight loss journey. If you’re struggling with weight loss, and you have health issues, sometimes it can be a good thing to encourage one another. I just love to see people succeeding at something I’ve had such a hard time with, so yeah, if you’re trying to lose weight, I’m probably going to follow your blog.

Fostering – This topic is near and dear to my heart. I am a foster parent so I do want to read blogs by other foster parents. I have contemplated writing about this topic myself. Maybe one day I will.

Friends – This is my blog list of my friends. These are people who blog who I consider to be my friend. I am always interested in what’s going on in your lives. I may not always have a chance to read your posts as you are writing them but I do hit this one first. I just love my friends.

Technical – This is my blog list of all things technical. If there is a platform I use on my computer or my device, I am probably going to follow your blog. For example: My Fitness Pal, Blogspot, Wordpress, Twitter, or Instagram. Because these are applications I use, I want to know what the developers are coming up with, or if there are any major changes coming down the pike.

What are some seasonal blogs you enjoy reading? What topics are you interested in that people are writing about? What’s in your news reader?

Let’s communicate about this as I’m always interested in finding and being able to read new blogs. What type of blogs interest you and why? What's blogs have you saved to read later? What's in your news reader? Now is a good time to leave a comment so we can chat about this!
